What: SONIA PAYES Re Generation. In association with the Queensland Festival of Photography, Percolator Gallery 134 Latrobe Terrace Paddington Brisbane.
Re Generation is a journey through almost a decade of work by Sonia Payes. Produced for the Queensland Festival of Photography, the exhibition documents the great cycle of transformation from birth to regeneration, and charts humanity’s ability to adapt to the changes in the earth’s mutable environment.
Many of the images on which these works are based were shot years ago, with no manipulation but only what was caught by the camera. Now she embraces technology and the opportunities it presents to stretch her work, quite literally, into the third dimension. Central to the work is an image of the artist’s daughter and muse who emerges from the chaos as a four-faced goddess to lead a new breed of humanity into the future.
In this exhibition Payes draws on what might initially seem like disparate bodies of work and re-presents them as a coherent and connected narrative. Although not a survey of her practice – it does not include the most recent landscapes from the exhibitions Interzone (2013) or Luminous Interlude (2011) which was shown at the Queensland Centre for Photography last year – it records her exploration of the key themes that have shaped her practice.
In November 2014, Payes will exhibit a monumental sculpture as part of the McClelland Sculpture Survey, the result of her creative development over the past decade and her trust in the artistic process that has led to this realisation of her ideas in three dimensional form.
