About the Archibald Prize: The Mornington Peninsula Regional Gallery is proud to be the only venue in Victoria presenting the Archibald Prize in 2014. Commencing at the Art Gallery of New South Wales in 1921, the current prize of $75,000 is awarded annually to the best portrait, ‘preferentially of some man or woman distinguished in art, letters, science or politics, painted by any resident in Australasia’. Often controversial, and never dull, this iconic award has been awarded to many of Australia’s most prominent artists including George Lambert (1927), William Dobell (1943, 1948 and 1959), Brett Whiteley (1976 and 1978), Ben Quilty (2011) and Kathryn Del Barton (2013). The Archibald Prize was established to foster portraiture and perpetuate the memory of great Australians. The Archibald Prize is an Art Gallery of New South Wales exhibition toured by Museums and Galleries, NSW.
