TALLIS 100 YEARS 2016What: Centenary Celebrations.  In August 2016 Beleura House & Garden celebrates 100 years of Tallis family ownership with much sparkling entertainment crowned by the musical mash-up, 1916!  Sir George Presents…Florence, Young as Ever

One of JC Williamson’s most successful ventures was the Royal Comic Opera Company and its greatest star was Florence Young, who was Sir George Tallis’ sister-in-law, Lady Tallis’ sister. It’s a witty show originally devised to launch Florence Young’s biography by Frank Van Straten OAM, and in the tradition of JC Williamson, revived, refreshed and even more. The scintillating Wendy Grose brings the darling of the Post-Edwardian Comic Opera scene to life in a rollicking performance.

When: Thursday 4 August 1.30pm.  The performance will be followed by afternoon tea, bookings are essential.

The Australian National Academy of Music (ANAM)

What: Series No. 1 – EUPHORIC, The Rite of Spring, Igor Stravinsky.  The first recital in the ANAM Series this year will be a tour de force of two-piano writing, including Stravinsky’s original ballet The Rite of Spring in the composer’s own transcription. This is music to set the spirits soaring.

When: Thursday 18 August @ 1.30pm the performance will be followed by afternoon tea, bookings are essential.

What: 1916!

When: Friday 19 August @ 6.30pm & Saturday 20 August  @1.30pm & 6.30pm

1916 is set in Sir George Tallis’ office at Her Majesty’s theatre on Saturday the 19th of August 1916, the opening night of The Girl in the Train. Amongst the excited comings and goings of staff and stars alike as the curtain is about to rise, Sir George decides to take a moment for repose…

With outstanding singers from the world of opera and music theatre, a professional string ensemble, and full costumes, 1916 is a specially concocted extravaganza to celebrate the 100th anniversary of this special year and the connection between the Tallis family and Beleura, which Sir George purchased in 1916. This semi-staged show will bring back to life some of the greatest stage hits of 1916, all from shows produced by JC Williamson’s 100 years ago at Her Majesty’s Theatre, Exhibition Street, Melbourne.

About Beleura – the House & Garden

Beleura House & Garden ADFAS

Beleura at Mornington, erected in 1863 for James Butchart, was bequeathed to the people of Victoria by Jack Morton Tallis as a place of historic and educational interest. Beleura and its land, acquired by Sir George Tallis (1869-1948) and Lady Tallis in 1916, and from 1950 the home of Jack Morton Tallis (1911-1996) is deemed of national significance. Beleura, a property associated with The National Trust (Victoria) is an accredited museum under the MA (Vic) Museums Accreditation Program.
