About Us:  Arthaven is a uniquely new concept in the development of a new “Artists Collective” located on the Mornington Peninsula, Victoria, Australia. Our initiative is to form a network of creatives to share studio space and ideas in all artistic endeavours.  Our concept offers classes in all artistic mediums with workshops held by experienced and renowned local and visiting artists.

We support and encourage the involvement of all student abilities, from beginner to advanced levels.  Classes extend from demonstrations and instructional workshops, to individuals and small groups.

Arthaven is dedicated to artists and the lovers of art, with our desire to create new and inspirational works and concepts that will enhance your life and touch your heart. This exciting new venture offers a rich and relaxed environment where artists can socialise, work, exhibit and sell their art.  Our residence provides representation and promotion for artists through our studio gallery, website, facilitated marketing consultation and advertising.

Vision:  Arthaven will be holding displays, demonstrations and art exhibitions, incorporating artists in residence, actively creating for guests and visitors observation, accompanied by local musicians, food and wine. Part of the long term plan will see the eventual development of a combined artists retreat.   As a lover of the arts you are invited to become involved, as your support is fundamental to the promotion and development of creative people having accessible community space in one of the most inspirational locations in the world – the Mornington Peninsula.

BIG BACKYARD PROJECT @ SOMERVILLE SECONDARY COLLEGE

A ‘pilot’  graffiti management strategy currently being auspiced by Mornington Peninsula Shire titled the ‘Big Back Yard Project’  done in partnership with the The Department of Justice and Communities that Care (CTC) staff and students of Somerville Secondary College and Seaford artist Tony Sowersby has begun.

The project came about when the school’s internal fences were ‘tagged’ and students in a leadership program identified the need to improve the look and feel of the school grounds.  Tagging has been a severe problem for the community of Somerville and it was expressed by the leadership students that their school fences would be a good place to reconnect students with their community.  In conjunction a VCAL and community wetlands project is being developed and the mural project will create a gateway or entry to  the wetlands revitalisation project.

I visited the school today to see how the project was progressing and to my delight is coming along quite quickly.  The leading teacher at Somerville Catherine May said students have been very enthusiastic for the opportunity to see how an artist approaches this type of work and knowing their contribution to improving the school’s landscape has inspired a huge commitment across the whole school.  Not only are students happy to be freed up from their usual curriculum, they are truly inspired and fully engaged in the project.  Due to the school being situated on an important Aboriginal meeting place the overall themes of the artwork are the landscape pre-European settlement and include, kangaroos, bandicoots, magpies, ibis, snake, frogs and native flora.   It’s looking so beautiful!

All students from Years 7 to VCE/VCAL are participating in this exciting new initiative to build stronger connections, by making a difference and being of value to their community.  I shall keep updating the artsonthepeninsula blog with news of the project.   Go Somerville Secondary College!

A PLEE FROM TONY SOWERSBY

Hi,

My friend Pax Jakupa, an immensely talented artist from near Goroka in the Easter Highlands of Papua New Guinea, is staying with us for the next month.   He is producing wonderful paintings in my studio – free from a lot of the cares and stresses that he works under back home.

Pax has been offered a solo exhibition by Without Pier Gallery later this year but he needs to be able to sustain himself and his family so that he can make the most of this opportunity.

In PNG there are very limited opportunities for artists. There are no grants, a very small number of buyers and no Social Security as such.

We have decided to offer for sale a small print run (50) of one of Pax’s works “Meri redi lo marit (the bride)” (see attached) in order to support him over the next few months.

This is a signed reproduction print on high quality rag paper. The image size is 36 x 51cms and is available unframed for $150.

Please contact me if you wish to purchase a print.

Kind regards,

Tonyps. Please pass this on to anyone you think might be interested.

HEARTLANDS REFUGEE FINE ART PRIZE WINNER EXHIBITING @ POINT NEPEAN

I attended the opening of a beautiful exhibition of cut and reassembled coloured papers at Parks Victoria’s Visitors Centre Point Nepean yesterday to view artist Ma Late’s work as the winner of the 2011 Heartlands Refugee Fine Art Prize for 2011.

The exhibition is a collaboration between AMES, (formerly known as the Adult Multicultural Education Services) Multicultural Arts Victoria and supported by Parks Victoria and VicHealth.

The prize enabled Ma Late to take up an artist residency at Werribee Park for 3 months to produce works for the Refugee Art Prize .  This opportunity extends her experience as a professional artist and provides much deserved exposure of her work.

Originally from Burma, Karen artist Ma Late spent twenty years in a refugee camp in Thailand after being forced to flee due to depredations of the Burmese Army

The exhibition will run at Point Nepean until April 15 2012.

A VISUAL COLLECTIVE @ OAK HILL GALLERY MORNINGTON

“A VISUAL COLLECTIVE” is the title of Mornington’s Oak Hill Gallery August Exhibition of contemporary landscapes and abstract expressionism by 4 local artists.

Philip Mead’s abstract works employ strong line and colour with an interplay of planes of colour emphasizing composition.

Susanna Sandler – Mead sees her paintings of the bird world and her “mask series” as stories in intricate detail

Hayden Jarrett, also an environmental sculptor,  says his desert themed gouaches and oils are like a visual reference to a music score as the trees of the landscape seem to play across the landscape like notes on a page.

Hand worked kiln formed glass work by Marlene Kasper takes many forms, geometric and organic shapes, emphasizing colour and texture.

When: July 30 – August 24

Where:  Oak Hill Gallery 100 Mornington- Tyabb Road , Mornington.

Open Tuesday – Sunday from 11am – 4pm
